The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation into a collision between a school bus and a motorcycle that left one person dead on Indy’s near southeast side.
What Did the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Say?
According to IMPD officers, an Indianapolis Public Schools bus and a motorcycle collided around 3 a.m. at the S. Kealing Avenue and E. Orange Street intersection.
The crash occurred in a residential area located close to S. Sherman Drive and Southeastern Avenue on September 23.
Was Anyone Injured?
A representative from the school district later reported that a child had been injured. The ISP school bus was carrying fewer than 10 students when the tragic accident occurred.
Furthermore, the motorcycle driver, a man in his 30s, was rushed to an area hospital after the crash happened.
What Happened to the Motorcycle Driver?
Unfortunately, the motorcyclist’s relatives informed local media that he had died of his injuries on Friday night.
Neighbors, who rushed to the victim’s aid and tried to bring the ambulance as soon as the accident occurred, said they were devastated by what happened.
Maybe The Driver Lost Control?
Footage from doorbell and mounted surveillance cameras in the area captured the collision.
In the video, the motorcyclist can be seen riding across S. Kealing Avenue toward Terrace Avenue, where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour.
However, there was no stop sign in his path. When the IPS school bus approached, the 30-year-old motorcyclist tried some maneuvers to avoid the vehicle, but none of them worked.
More Footage Revealed Further Information
Another video retrieved from a nearby home surveillance camera showed the bus approaching the E. Orange Street and S. Kealing Avenue intersection.
The stop sign was there. However, the school bus does not stop but continues driving towards the intersection until it collides with the driver.
Witnesses say the motorcyclist had the right of way. Others expressed concern about the children’s safety, saying the event likely left them traumatized, as everyone witnessed the crash.
Indy’s Near Southeast Side Residents Asking For Help
Neighbors also asked authorities to address the issue, saying that neither cars nor buses usually stop at that stop sign.
People living in the residential area, located close to S. Sherman Drive and Southeastern Avenue, called on officials to prevent another similar accident from happening in the neighborhood, asking for more stop signs and speed bumps.
A spokesman for First Student, the district’s school bus operator, told media the driver had been removed from service immediately while the company conducts an active investigation.
IPS School Bus and Motorcycle Involved in Accident: Who Is Liable?
Unfortunate events can happen at any time of the day, but who is really responsible?
Crashes involving school buses can be complicated. If injured people or the victims’ family members want to take legal action, they need to know who is the right person to file a lawsuit against.
Even though the school bus driver often appears to be at fault, other entities may be involved or take part in the legal action.
They Could Be Liable Or be involved in the case
- School bus driver
- School district responsible for hiring the driver
- The company that operates the school bus
- The company that made the school bus
- Third-party recruitment agency contracted by the school district to hire school bus driving services
- Insurance companies.
All school districts have different policies for handling school transportation services.
Therefore, if you or a family member has been involved in a school bus accident, it is essential to seek legal assistance to analyze the contracts and include all responsible parties in the claim.
What Can Personal Injury Lawyers Do?
When there is an accident involving a school bus, there can be many at-fault parties, including the manufacturer, the driver, and even the school district.
Therefore, the first thing someone should do when they or their family members are victims of these types of incidents is to seek professional help from an experienced personal injury lawyer.
If a child or anyone else is injured by a driver’s negligence, a personal injury attorney can help them take legal action against at-fault parties.
When an accident becomes a tragedy and someone dies, an experienced wrongful death attorney can help the victims’ families seek the compensation they deserve for their loss.
